Say Yes to Dumbbells

"Lift because it makes you better, not because lifting is now become a fad" — Daniella

I was in the middle of my personal training session with one of my clients, who has been training with me for over a year now, when she stopped and asked me, "Do you think I should stop lifting? My husband thinks I'm going to start getting bulky."                                     Now there were quite a few funny responses that came to my head at that very minute because, a) she was barely lifting 2kgs and I recently introduced her to 5kgs  b) she is skinny and was slowly starting to build some tone in her arms and was loving it. c) I mean i could go on and on...

Now if you don't know what was wrong with the question that my client asked me and this is something that worries you too, please keep reading! You are in the right place.

In the world of fitness, we often hear the question: “Do women really need to lift weights?” Well, let me break it to you gently (just as gently as you’d grip a dumbbell, of course): YES! Weightlifting is essential, not only for men but for women too. And no, it won’t turn you into the Hulk overnight. Bulking up my friends is a lot harder than you think!

Here's why picking up weights might just be the best thing you can do for your body and mind, and why “weightlifting for women” isn’t just a trend – it’s here to stay!

1. Build Lean Muscle, Not Bulk                                                                                                             There’s a common myth out there that lifting weights will make women “bulky.” But ladies, let me assure you, building a significant amount of muscle takes time, effort, and specific training! According to fitness icon Jillian Michaels, “Transformation isn’t a future event. It’s a present activity.” Adding weight training to your routine doesn’t mean you’ll bulk up overnight; it means you’ll build beautiful, lean muscle that makes you stronger, gives you confidence, and helps you feel more empowered.

2. Burn More Calories – Even When You’re Not Moving                                                                  Celebrity trainer Jeanette Jenkins once said, “The more muscle you have, the more fat you burn.” That’s right – The more lean muscle you have, the more calories you’ll burn throughout the day – even while binge-watching your favourite show! One of the biggest perks of lifting weights is that it boosts your metabolism.

3. Strengthen Your Bones, Joints, and Heart                                                                          Aging gracefully is a goal we all share, and weightlifting can be a secret weapon in the battle against aging. Weight training is one of the best ways to increase bone density, which is essential for preventing osteoporosis as we age. According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, weight-bearing and resistance exercises are some of the most effective ways to build and maintain bone density.

4. Mental & Emotional Benefits:Stronger Body, Stronger Mind                                                     I always tell my clients that fitness isn’t just about the body – it’s about strengthening the mind and spirit too. Weightlifting, with its focus on progression and personal goals, helps boost confidence, reduce anxiety, and even improve mood. Nothing feels quite like hitting a new personal record, whether it's lifting an extra 5 pounds or completing more reps.

5. Become Your Own Superhero                                                                                      Weightlifting empowers you. There’s something undeniably powerful about being able to lift heavy weights and know that you’re strong, capable, and resilient. Fitness influencer Kayla Itsines says, “Exercise isn’t just about how you look. It’s about how you feel.” And feeling strong? That’s priceless.

SO, To all my amazing clients and friends: lifting weights isn’t just about building muscles; it’s about building a lifestyle of health, resilience, and confidence. AND I hope you now know why and how wrong, the question my client asked me was!  Girl the next time someone tells you not to lift, you know where to send them ;)

Now, go lift – and live – like a legend!
